In Memoriam: Joy Stevenson (updated)

Joyce Owen Stevenson
Requiescat in pace

It is with great sadness that I inform you that Joy, the devoted wife of Bishop E. Mark Stevenson, has died. Their journey together in life has been a reflection of her name. Grieving her death with our bishop are their children, grandchildren, and a multitude of family and friends.

Those who knew Joy have spoken of her compassion, generosity of spirit, and loving presence. More than a partner in marriage, she engaged in her own ministry of support, service, and counsel to all she encountered. She was a good and faithful servant of God. We pray that Joy now rests in peace as she begins life again in the presence of our Creator.

Further information concerning a service to celebrate her life will be announced as soon as arrangements are made.

I ask your prayers for Bishop Stevenson and his family, that God’s grace and comfort will endow them with the strength they will need as they mourn the wonderful Joy.

May the words of St. Paul in the Letter to the Romans uphold the Stevenson Family and all who share in their grief:|

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels,
nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation,
will be able to separate us from the love of God
in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 8:38f)

Yours In The Risen Christ,

+Gayle Elizabeth Harris
Assistant Bishop of Virginia
