Given the trends in the county infection rate, the Delta variant, CDC guidance and other pertinent information, everyone will be required to wear masks at services starting this Sunday, no matter vaccination status. Our goal is to keep one another as safe as we possibly can. We are very concerned about the continued high rates of infection and transmission, combined with a low vaccination rate, and are monitoring the situation very closely. We urge everyone who is eligible to be vaccinated. Please keep an eye on our website and your email in case important updates need to be shared.

From Aug. 12 through 16 Mother Kathy is scheduled to be away. With that in mind, the Aug. 15 Sunday services are Morning Prayer. If you have a pastoral emergency while she is away, please contact your senior warden (Neil Fadely at St. Andrew’s, Kirk Denkler at Emmanuel). You may also email Melissa as usual for help with other issues or concerns.

We’re sorry to announce that we’ve had to make the difficult decision to cancel the Annual St. Andrew’s Rummage Sale on Aug. 28. We appreciate all your support. Watch for more info coming soon!

Starting August 18 at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday Healing Eucharist is returning at Emmanuel.

Trudy Pence was inspired by Barbara Arnold’s memories to share hers about Jean-Allen on the second anniversary of her death.

Some years ago, pharmacist, avid fly fisherman, author and teacher Harry Murray was having a public anniversary celebration of his career. Jean-Allen asked Dick and I to go with her to help him celebrate and to thank him for his many contributions to the community and to us personally.

Included in the activities was a fly-casting competition, which would determine how close or in a 5 gallon bucket you could place your line. Jean-Allen said she wanted to try this!  WHAT? We learned that she had learned the techniques of using a fly rod by going fishing with her Dad when she was a young girl!

There were several guys standing around deciding who would go first. I noticed them snicker and roll their eyes when Jean-Allen picked up a rod. Grinning from ear to ear, with the grace of a ballerina, she sent her line in a fluid, smooth arc to the rim of the bucket! We were awed!

The no-longer smirking guys, possibly not willing to be bested by a little ‘ole grey-haired lady, walked rather sadly away!  We were so very proud of her and will always remember her very satisfied giggle as those guys left. We don’t remember the prize, but it didn’t matter anyway.

(Mother Kathy recalls Jean Allen telling her she’d never had a Philly cheesesteak, then politely insisting one be brought back to her when Mother Kathy next visited Philly.)

We’re  in great need of volunteers to assist with ordering, inventory and to help Tillie with volunteer recruitment/scheduling. If you know anyone who may be interested in helping, please have them contact Mother Kathy ASAP.

As Barbara Kirkland says, “As the Body of Christ, our congregation is directed to ‘welcome the stranger, feed the hungry’ and twice a month we do this in Christ’s name asking only, ‘how many are in your family?’ Emmanuel’s Table is a way for us to BE the church, rather than just go to church. When you support us with your time, (sic) you are there with us as the face of Christ in the world.”
The pantry is open in August on the second and fourth Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Aug. 10 and 24). If you know of anyone in need of food, please send them over. More info.

Our prayer list can be found on our website. If you have folks you’d like added to the prayer list, please email their names to Melissa.

You’re welcome to bring your pledge to Sunday service or continue to mail it to the church.
