Meditation for the 17th Week after Pentecost

Deeper than Melodrama from Bishop Porter Taylor   “If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” — Alexander Solzhenitsyn Think back to 2008. John McCain is holding a rally near election day.…

1980s Women of Emmanuel Christmas Recipe Book

Elizabeth Cottrell recently came across the book of recipes linked above. It was created as a fundraiser by the women of Emmanuel back in the 1980’s. Elizabeth and Trudy Pence have estimated it to be from the mid-to-late 80s. It’s filled with delicious cookies, breads and more that were favorites of the women who shared them. Hopefully, reading through it brings back fond memories of Christmases past, those who are no longer with us and time spent enjoying good food…

Meditation: Inhabiting This Time

When we figured out that we would not gather again as congregations for Easter because of COVID, we were stunned, and sad, and a little overwhelmed, but we figured we’d be back by summer. Now we know that this is not a short interruption, but seismic disruption of our common life. When the world falls apart and we the life we know suddenly disappears, our natural response is lament. When Nebuchadnezzar’s army tore down Solomon’s Temple and flattened Jerusalem, hauling…
